Facilitator: Jackie Baker – Jackie is a dedicated PCSBV volunteer with a generosity of heart. She has decades of palliative care experience including managing a hospice on the west coast. Her degree in sociology fostered her curiosity in all things related to the human/social journeys and especially end-of-life issues. She has a special interest in ritual and ceremony to mark life’s major thresholds. Since Jackie draws inspiration and balance from nature, it’s not unlikely to see her wandering the hills!

Learning objectives:
1. Understand the emotional needs, losses, fears and hopes of the client and their family
2. Explore personal attitudes and feelings about death
3. Develop the skills to provide support for the client and family as they cope with emotional experiences

At the end of this module, volunteers will be able to:
• Describe the emotional/psychological concerns and needs of someone who is dying/grieving and their family
• Describe how the palliative care team will provide emotional support during the dying process
• Describe the role and limits of the volunteer in providing emotional support
• Describe their own concept of “dying well” and how this may influence their work as a volunteer
